| Procrastination |
[Sep. 10th, 2010|01:30 am] |
While procrastinating packing, I was looking through the marketing material for my new shoes and found (in regards to New Balance) "For us, Committed to American Workers is more than a slogan or viewpoint – it is the heart and 'sole' of our company."
Eagerly, I looked over to the French translation, hoping that they had preserved the pun in some clever way. Unfortunately, they preserved the pun, but literally: "À nos yeux, Dévoués à l'Amérique n'est pas qu'un simple slogan – il s'agit du coeur et de la 'semelle' mêmes de notre société".
Sadly, I can't come up with anything better myself. Oh, well; miles to go before I sleep. |

| BP and numbers |
[Jun. 11th, 2010|08:36 pm] |
|
From BP's web page:
In the first 12 hours of June 9 (midnight to noon), approximately 7,920 barrels of oil were collected…
This is BP trying to put its best foot forward. It sounds really impressive, but when one remembers that for the past month and a half at least 500 thousand barrels a day have been escaping, 8 thousand seems, well, a drop in the barrel. |

| Incorrect assumptions |

From an e-mail today:
Ever since you received your trial subscription to SIRIUS Satellite Radio with your new car, you've gotten over 130 channels of the best music, sports and entertainment around. But in the next few weeks, your subscription is coming to an end.
That you've gotten line is pretty funny! |

| Useless protests |
[May. 9th, 2010|12:56 am] |
Hey, I forgot I had this. You probably did too... anyway. I noticed in a SciAm article the following tidbit:
In New Orleans, about 200 people holding banners saying "Clean It Up" protested on Saturday against BP, the spill and its environmental consequences.
So, they're protesting that something happened that nobody wanted and everybody is working as hard as they can to fix. I guess everybody needs something to do... |

| For some reason |
[Apr. 29th, 2009|01:42 am] |
This snippet overheard on IRC fills me with fear:
it works! i should add "|"(pipe) to the command, and i can execute it!
print((new File("|curl http://google.com/")).readAll());
Only SpiderMonkey people will understand why, exactly. |

| Awesome poem |
[Apr. 13th, 2009|01:20 pm] |
Why I Did Not Reign
Eve Merriam A Sky Full of Poems, 1973
I longed to win the spelling bee
And I remembered the rule
I had learned in school:
"I before E,
Except after C."
Friend, believe me,
No one was going to deceive me.
Fiercely, I practiced, the scepter I'd wield,
all other their shields in the field would yield!
Alas, before my very eyes
A weird neighbor in a beige veil
Feigning great height and weighty size
Seized the reigns and ran off with the prize.
Now I no longer deign to remember that rule.
Neither
Any other either.
Reminds me of The Wonderful O, with its clever (non-)use of the letter O in the sections talking about the tyrant. Hat tip to this LJ post.

| Google, still not as evil as Apple |
[Apr. 1st, 2009|11:36 pm] |
http://tech.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=09/04/01/2224244 tells a story of Google having to ban an application. Slashdot says Maybe Android and the Android Market aren't so open after all. But the difference is that Google is pointing to a ToS with a clear reason that the application is not allowed on T-Mobile phones. As I understand it, Apple waves its hands and some nebulous rule stops your application isn't allowed (and these rules can apparently be retracted, otherwise I wouldn't be able to buy iFart now). |

| A really unfortunate sentence |
[May. 11th, 2008|12:27 am] |
Seen at this YouTube video: Movie remake coming in 2008 starring Keanu Reeves .
I cannot think of a more unfortunate sentence for a movie (with all due respect to Keanu Reeves, he should really stick to "whoa" characters who don't know what's going on and/or are high). |

| What you *don't* want to see working on your project |

Fortunately, the cause here was easy to spot and easy to fix. |
